abstract = {Multidrug-resistant (MDR) infections are on the rise globally, often exhibiting significant geographical variability and posing a great threat especially in the low- and middle-income countries. We aimed at investigating the prevalence and patterns of MDR clinical infections in our local Hospital. This was a point prevalence study involving admitted patients in our hospital, following routine sample processing, data was extracted from the microbiology processing forms and clinical files of the patients using a well-structured proforma. Ethical approval was sought and obtained for the study. Analysis was done with the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22. There were 101 patients with complete documentation. The age range was from 2 – 65 years, with 58 (57.4%) female and 43 (42.6%) male. There were 17 isolated organisms, of these, 13 (76.5%) were multidrug-resistant. No significant association was found between sex, age, and sub-specialties of the patient and MDR infections. The overall prevalence of MDR infections found among the patients was 12.9%. and more common among the males (61.5%). More MDR infections were recorded among patients in Nephrology subspecialties. The common isolates were S. aureus (n=6, 35.3%), then E. coli (n=3, 17.6%), P. aeruginosa (n=5, 29.4%), Klebsiella spp. (n=6, 17.6%), 76.5% of these organisms were MDRO. The study documents prevalent high multidrug-resistant bacterial infections, calling for urgent and improved effort in the implementation of infection control measures and antibiotic stewardship in our hospitals so as to limit the spread of multidrug-resistant bacteria.},

abstract = {Lower GI bleeding (LGIB) is a common presentation in clinical practice and is due to varying aetiologies with differing prognosis. We set out to determine the aetiologies and patterns of presentation of LGIB in Madonna Hospital, an endoscopy referral centre based in Makurdi, North-Central Nigeria. This was a retrospective study based on hospital records spanning a 42-month period that were retrieved, and relevant data was extracted and subjected to analyses. We observed that haemorrhoids were the most common cause of LGIB in this study with majority of the study participants presenting electively. However, malignancies were the second most common aetiology and presented in relatively older population. About one-quarter of the study participants presented as emergencies that required resuscitation. Other causes of LGIB in this study include infectious, inflammatory and vascular disorders. These should be borne in mind when evaluating patients presenting with lower GI bleeding},

abstract = {The availability of the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) has revolutionized the practice of radiology in the past two decades and has shown to eventually increase productivity in radiology and medicine. Clear understanding/insight into the levels of knowledge and acceptance as well as the challenges associated with the use of picture archiving and communication systems is important for mass adoption of this technological innovation. The aim of the study is to assess the level of knowledge, acceptance and challenges in the use of PACS among the health care workers in Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH), Oghara. Nigeria. The level of knowledge, acceptance and challenges in the use of PACS was evaluated among a total of two hundred healthcare workers in DELSUTH from various profession such as doctors, nurses, radiographers were evaluated. The data was analyzed with the aid of Statistical Software for Social Science (SPSS) v 26 (IBM, New York, USA). There was a high level of knowledge (89.5%, n=179) and usage (71%, n=142) of PACS despite formal training being received by only 55% (n=110) of respondents. High level of acceptance was noted, with PACS perceived to aid clinical decisions (80.5%, n=161), improve patient outcomes (85.5%, n=171), and be superior to traditional methods (75%, n=150). Challenges observed include varying computer skills (26.5%, n=53; highly skilled), network issues affecting usage (57%, n=114), and shortages of equipment like monitors (64.5%, n=129). All categories of healthcare workers in DELSUTH showed a high level of knowledge as well as acceptance of PACS. However, there is lack of adequate equipment especially monitors.},

abstract = {Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is a chronic, debilitating condition prevalent in Nigeria. Hydroxyurea therapy has been shown to reduce the frequency and severity of disease complications. However, its uptake in Nigeria has been limited due to concerns about safety, accessibility, and awareness. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory outcomes of children with SCA on hydroxyurea therapy at the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, Nigeria. Atotal of 43 children diagnosed with SCA were followed after initiation of hydroxyurea therapy. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, frequency of SCA-related events and laboratory parameters were collected and analyzed using SPSS version 23. Paired t-tests were used to compare pre- and post-treatment outcomes, and adverse effects were recorded. The majority (65.1%) of the children were diagnosed with SCA by age two, and 60.5% started hydroxyurea within two years of diagnosis. Hydroxyurea therapy significantly reduced the frequency of vaso-occlusive crises (mean reduction from 7.70 to 1.91, p = .000), hospital admissions (mean reduction from 2.60 to 0.84, p = .000), and blood transfusions (mean reduction from 1.51 to 0.40, p = .005). Hospital stay duration also decreased significantly (p = .001). Laboratory findings showed significant reductions in WBC count (p = .001) and increases in MCV, while hemoglobin levels remained stable. Mild skin pigmentation and dizziness were observed as adverse effects. Low-dose hydroxyurea therapy in children with SCA resulted in substantial clinical benefits, including reduced disease complications and improved laboratory markers, with minimal adverse effects.},

abstract = {Postnatal period, encompassing six weeks following childbirth is crucial for both the mother and the baby. A woman's
postnatal well-being is influenced by physical health, mental well-being, social relationships, environmental conditions, and self-esteem. This study seeks to determine the pattern and determinants of Quality of Life (QoL), among women attending postnatal clinic in a Nigerian Teaching Hospital. A descriptive cross-sectional design using simple random sampling method was adopted. The study was conducted at the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital Ondo between January and October 2023. Statistical significance was considered at a p-value less than 0.05. The QoL assessment showed that 81.2% of the respondents reported good physical health, 87.1% had stable psychological health, 90.6% had strong social well-being, and 82.4% had general satisfaction with their environment. Overall, the data showed positive trends in physical, psychological, social, and environmental well-being. The study found that respondents with vaginal delivery had a higher odd of above average quality of life, which was 14 times higher than those with Caesarean or instrumental delivery. (OR 14.206, p= 0.002) Additionally, the odds of above average quality of life increased by 1.644 points per unit increase in self-esteem. (OR 1.644, p <0.001). However, those who didn't plan their pregnancy had a lower odd of above average quality of life, which was 0.165 times lower than those who planned their pregnancy. (OR= 0.165, p=0.010).
